Lagoa do Fogo

The Fire Lagoon is the second largest Lagoon on the island of Sao Miguel, and also the highest, classified as Natural Reserve, as its natural and landscape value. The caldera of a dormant volcano which was formed about 15,000 years ago, the Fire Lagoon for its enchanting natural beauty and phenomenal size, reaching as high as 30 feet deep, where we can better observe the interesting flora and fauna characteristics of this geological phenomenon.

The Old caldera is characterized by its geological features fed by streams of hot water springs of thermal origin that fall like waterfalls with brown water due to the abundance of iron in the water. The water temperature and its medicinal properties have been used for centuries for bathing.

In addition to beautiful sights, the tour also includes visits to the city of Ribeira Grande the Liquor factory and pottery factory, much appreciated by tourists.
